THE FORTNIGHTLY CLUB
OF REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA  - Founded 24 January 1895

Medical

TuberculosisTuberculosis meeting
Jan 3 Physicians to meet about prevention of spread of TB in Redlands
Tuberculosis sanitorium
Jan 29 The hotel and private residences turn away "invalids" with tuberculosis. A guarantee of $50,000 would be needed for a sanitorium.
TB mortality
Report from the Board of Health covering the year ending June 1, 1895. There were cases of typhoid fever. There were 72 deaths, half of which were due to consumption. Three of the consumption deaths were attributable to the city - all but three were invalids from that disease hoping to prolong their lives by coming to Redlands. two of the three cases acquired in the city were nurses of invalids. One-fourth of all adults in U.S. die of consumption.
TB cure swindle
July 20 c An "old physician" who is earnestly anxious to send sufferers from consumption a recipe "free of charge" that will absolutely cure that and all kindred diseases. He is hereby disrespectfully informed that he cannot obtain advertising space in the Citrograph at any price. The whole thing is a swindle, a fake, and our columns will never knowingly contain any kind of swindling advertisements. We need money in advertisements but not enough to boost swindles and fakes.
Dr. Payton opens practice
Oct 31 Dr. J.E. Payton opened practice over Foote & Beatty's book store
