SB County Grand Jury condemned the jailer, Newton Brown, who engaged in outrageous immoral and illegal practices, including stealing from the prisoners, selling one a key to escape. He would discharge vagrants in the morning and charge the county for the prisoner’s lunch. A negro woman prisoner’s cells was left accessible to all the men prisoners.

Forty-two years ago today the legislature passed the act forming the County of San Bernardino. Redlands, eight years old, is the second largest city in San Bernardino County.
